The passion to care for people and render assistance when needed has always existed in our hearts. A tragic medical event that happened at a foremost Nigerian hospital in 2015 however accelerated the birth of our organization. A friend narrated how her pregnant sister-in-law was in a prolonged labor and had the baby through C-section. Unfortunately, the baby died because of the prolonged labor. The mother subsequently was in pain and unable to urinate and a catheter was needed to ease her pain and take out the urine. Surprisingly, the hospital did not have any catheter and all efforts to urgently obtain it were initially unsuccessful. By the time the hospital finally got a catheter and took out the urine from the mother, it was obviously too late because the woman died thereafter. This event was a catalyst that triggered the immediate efforts to start what is known today as “GIVEN TO GIVE INCORPORATION”.
We started brainstorming on the root cause of this event and more importantly, that it happened in a foremost hospital in a city. We were concerned of what may be happening in local medical centers and smaller hospitals in rural areas and communities.
So, we stepped into action by soliciting for medical supplies. Our initial efforts were focused on ex-classmates from the nursing school and their response was very impressive. We subsequently approached colleagues, friends, and supervisors, including companies for medical supplies and the response was also positive and overwhelming. At this point, news of our efforts was spreading and in the course of time, our donors started donating non-medical supplies such as clothing items, household wares, and toys. Once we receive donations, we identify rural communities, local medical centers, and groups and ship these items to them for distribution to the needy, the poor, the vulnerable groups, and the economically disadvantaged people..

Olusola Toyinbo-Ojo is the President and Founder of GIVEN TO GIVE INCORPORATION, a not-for-profit organization and a community-focused initiative that came into existence to assist our communities in diverse areas of need. I had an initial background in teaching and personnel management which gave me an insight into the quality of life of individuals from different family structures and communities. I identified at this early time that all fingers are not equal and a lot of people could have achieved more in life if given the same opportunities that some others have. These insights formed the basis of my philanthropic thinking but resources were just not available to make any significant impact. I carried this burden on my shoulder for a long time. In 2002, I had the opportunity to migrate to Florida in United States of America and this same burden migrated with me.
In America, I enrolled for the Associate and Bachelor degrees in Nursing at Miami Dade College (MDC), Miami, FL. The experience in the nursing program and a career in nursing further re-opened my passion to help others and reinforced the thought of how to give back to the communities.
I started brainstorming with other people of like minds on the root cause of this event more importantly, that it happened in a foremost hospital in a city. We were concerned of what may be happening in local medical centers and smaller hospitals in rural areas and communities.
We resolved we needed to do something to help our rural communities and local medical centers and we stepped into action by soliciting for medical supplies. Our initial efforts were focused on ex-classmates from the nursing school and we were very impressed with the overwhelming response from this group. Subsequently, we extended our donation drives for medical supplies to colleagues, friends, and supervisors, including companies and the response was also positive awesome.
At this point, news of our efforts was spreading and in the course of time, the vision went beyond donation of medical supplies to donation of clothing items, household wares, and toys. Once we receive donations, we identify rural communities, medical centers, and groups and ship these items to them for distribution to the needy, the poor, the vulnerable groups, and the economically disadvantaged people.
The dream of yesteryears finally became a reality in September 2019 when GIVEN TO GIVE INCORPORATION was officially registered in Florida. Prior to its registration and up till now, our organization has initiated a series of humanitarian and philanthropic programs which have positively touched the lives of our people. A glimpse of our programs are provided in the “Executed Projects” section.
This organization has been self-financing before and since its registration. The paucity of funds limits our capacity to initiate as many programs that we would have loved to implement in order to meet the ever-increasing needs of identified rural communities. We are very conscious of our humble beginning and are eternally grateful to our enthusiastic donors for tremendous support: We say a big “THANK YOU.” In our efforts to move to the next level and make more impact on our identified rural communities, we seek the support, donations, and partnership of individual and corporate bodies. Our working together will greatly improve the quality of life of our people in different locations in the world.
